Summer has arrived along with some much-needed opportunities for fun in the sun: beach days, barbecues, and nights spent on patios. Don’t worry – that doesn’t mean you have to get derailed from achieving your fitness goals! Here are my top 3 tips for staying lean in summer:
Stay active throughout the day
Take advantage of the warm and beautiful days by finding ways to do lower-intensity exercises daily, like gardening, Yoga on the Hill or salsa dancing at City Hall. People often think low-intensity workouts are useless for fat loss, but longer, low-intensity exercise uses fat as its primary fuel source – low, slow workouts literally burn fat. High-intensity workouts are great for muscle-building, but they tend to increase your appetite, while low-intensity workouts control your appetite. Combining the two (some high-intensity + lots of low-intensity) gives you the recipe for a leaner, stronger summer. Also, playing outside is an important mood booster that will help you feel fabulous and full of energy. You won’t need to eat as much and it’ll be easier to avoid cravings! Look for daily opportunities to get some light exercise in.
Be smart about carbs
It’s patio season and patios always come with drinks. If you want to have a drink or two, it’s crucial to eat fewer carbohydrates. Most alcoholic beverages contain lots of sugar (carbohydrates), so keep your macronutrients – carbs, fat, protein – balanced by eating foods higher in protein and fat, like a nice lean steak salad with vinaigrette, chicken stir fry, or an avocado salad with beans.Bonus tip: Stay hydrated! Alcohol dehydrates you and dehydration leads to cravings, so drink a glass of water between beverages – you’ll avoid the cravings and help stave off hangovers!
Spice up your commute
I know you’ve been looking for the chance to dust off that old skateboard in your attic! Whether it’s that or walking, biking, or rollerblading around, get out of your car and hit the pavement – you’ll burn a few extra fat calories while getting to where you need to go.
If you want to lose weight, you have to be in a calorie deficit; these tips will help you get there. You might as well burn some fat while you enjoy your summer, right?
